The Unexamined Life is Not Worth Living

I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance. - Socrates

Something is brewing inside me. Not only have I been trying so hard to control my emotions (or PMS); I’ve also begun to rationalize everything I hear, see and experience. I want to know what triggers one’s behaviour and thoughts towards certain things, what is the underlying cause that drives one to react to situations in a certain way and how does that affect his or her emotions.

Though not entirely judging people, my quest in digging and probing may perhaps lead people into thinking I’m doing just that as well as imposing my principles onto others. I’ve come to realize that this inner force that is driving me to question all that surrounds me may perhaps provide me with a greater understanding of my life once again. I’ve grown to accept that such rationalization is beneficial and the quest for meaning is endless.

I now know my life purpose and I extend a warm hug to those who have contributed to my happiness, with meaning. I thank those who have afflicted pain, because one will not experience joy without it.

It's an ongoing quest and I wish that you, like me, will eventually yearn to comprehend the mysteries of our existence and finally embrace a purpose for it in this short moment we have on Earth. Since life is short, all the more we should channel it to one that is of purpose and meaning...in your own ways of course.

Random Thoughts

It’s perplexing how presumptuous one can get. It’s also maddening to see one act on their assumptions unabashedly, without thinking that what comes out of their mouth will no doubt end up as their own judgment of themselves.

They centre their life on thrashing and feeding off others in a proclaimed self-righteous manner. Does this make one feel good about oneself? Do people derive a certain sense of pleasure by doing so?

I’ve always believed that humans are born evil, that morality is learnt as we grow. Right and wrong only becomes obvious when we become victims or find ourselves stuck in a disadvantageous situation, and being subjected to ridicule and humiliation. We only learn through what we have been taught and personal experiences. To grow up around egotistical people will somehow influence how we portray others to be. The whole notion of judgment may perhaps lie underneath each person’s subconscious desire of being the fittest, the smartest and the most beautiful of them all. So why not just give your ego a big boost in the expense of others?

When all that has died down, how worthy do you think you are? Bear in mind that eventually everything ceases into oblivion, that you too, will disappear and what is left will only be fragments of memories - you have barely existed. You can never know if a person forgives you when you have wronged them. It becomes existentially important for you and will be a question that you will be immensely concerned with. Neither can you know whether a person loves you. It’s just something you have to believe or hope. And these are more important to you than knowing that the sum of the angles in a triangle adds up to 180 degrees.

According to Kierkegaard, there are three stages on life’s way (I don’t know to where but I’m still seeking). First stage, being the aesthetic stage, where one lives for the moment and grasps every opportunity of enjoyment. Such people differentiate something as either boring or fun. Good is whatever that is pleasurable. However, people living at this stage can easily experience angst. Angst is a good thing, as it may lead one to experience the second stage – the ethical stage, where one’s life is characterized by seriousness and responsibility. However, even the most dedicated person will feel trapped in this moral sense of duty and meticulosity. Thus starts the journey to the final stage – the religious stage, or for those who are non-religious, the existentialism stage – the meaning in existence and seeking value as an individual.

Unfortunately, plenty are still at the aesthetics stage and many remain there without journeying through the different stages. It may not be a bad thing, because living life to the fullest may just be their personal philosophy. However, life will pretty much be empty without a reflective attitude. Hence, some people often remain trapped and ultimately condemned to their own “freedom”.

Crush them like ants and stab their empty heart. Some people deserve no empathy. These beautiful and boring bores, I’m appalled by their lack of sensibility and intelligence. Those bunch of pretentious ass-kissers. Bah!

Which reminds me, just a disclaimer here: although we’re all guilty to superficial (and sometimes shallow) acts, WE however, understand the complex meaning of having to live in this world, and to what purpose, I’m still trying to find out. Hmm.

Taken By Surprise

What a nice surprise. Recieved my birthday present from Bunny, which was initially disguised as a present she had gotten for her friend (and all this while I was under the impression that she listened to me when I told her I don't need a present, since she's done so much already). Turned out that she had bought a print that I have been eyeing since god knows when.

She really took me by surprise this time. I cried in delight as I tore open the brown wrapping paper and saw Henri Rousseau's "Carnival Evening" on archive paper, which she brought for framing.

Love it, love it, love it. My first print ever that will be hung up on my wall, finally!

Now I've got to get my brother to hammer a nail in the wall.

I've been in pain since Sunday. Urgh, the agony of being a woman. There comes a time every month when I wish I wasn't born with a cunt. Bunny's been real sweet by soothing me and looking after me when I was writhing in pain, despite her own discomfort. *bliss*

We're both in pain today. Urgh.

12.09.2006

Bunny and I decided to dine at Brewerkz on my actual birthday. We shared a steak, an enormous bowl of salad (ah, the rabbits in us) and mussels. Now that we've covered Brewerkz, we can continue exploring other dining places. Mmmm. *licks lips*

Pale ale...

Apple crumble....hehe

Bunny looked pretty happy that day too, with food and all.

My colleagues were sweet enough to hold a mini celebration in the meeting room for me during teabreak. Honestly, I wasn't in any mood at all on my birthday to have any celebrations of such. Hmm. I didn't expect to recieve any presents at all as well.

Opening my present

After reaching home from dinner with Grace the next day, I opened up the parcel I recieved from Australia and finally got to see what CE got for my birthday - a necklace with a "K" pendant. Nice.

Meeting Sheren later to get my pressie. *rubs hands*. Wonder what it is. Kekeke.

A Saturday Night Full of Surprises @ Pan-Pacific

A heartfelt thanks to those who hid in the hotel room at Pan-Pacific, awaiting my return from dinner to pounce on me on Saturday night. Haha.

All thanks to my Bunny, who started planning my birthday surprise
with my friends without me knowing. So it all started when she said we should go to Marina Square to shop, which seemed rather fishy because it's not her to go to town during the weekend. Anyhow, I simply tagged along and she finally revealed a room she had booked at Pan-Pacific: Room #1207. Sweetness!

I remember the first thought on my mind was, "Damn, I don't have my facial foam, moisturizer, toothbrush, underwear, concealer....." Luckily she was smart (and sweet) enough to have smuggled my little black bag along with new underwear and clothes (oh, and a bottle of wine). All this she did without me knowing. Tsk.

We then went for dinner at Suntec and that was when the rest of YOU guys sneaked into the room. Hahaha. Upon entering the room after coming back from dinner, I took off my shoes, turned around and I saw Sheren creeping out of the bathroom, followed by Grace "coming out of the closet." Hahaahaha. Found that to be rather amusing.

Nevertheless, a warm thank you to all of you for making the effort and for being there as well. And a big, big thank you to my Bunny for her pre-birthday celebration plans since we got back from Samui. All the effort, brainstorming and collaborating with my friends was a success. Haha. You don't have to be so stressed now. =) I enjoyed myself thoroughly and I hope all of you did as well. *squeeze*

Here are the pics from Saturday night:

Sheren with my tiramisu birthday cake. Poor room service guy had to run down to fetch an extra candle; he thought I was 24 years old instead. Wahaha. Should have just left it as that.

Please...please...may my wishes come true...

Hmmm. Wait. Another wish.

We then headed down to Happy to continue the night and took a lot of silly pictures:

Hahahah. Ok. Enough scandalous pictures. Thank you once again and to those who couldn't make it, but sent me their regards anyway.

A lesson learnt that day was to not expect anything, because you'll eventually get surprised by the smallest things.

Samui Trippin'

A brief breakdown of my trip to Koh Samui.

Day 1 - Koh Tao and Koh Nangyuan

We touched down at Koh Samui on Wednesday night and joined the snorkeling tour for the next day at Koh Tao and Nangyuan immediately.

Making our way to the ferry bound for Koh Nangyuan

I know she's been wanting to see that famous sand strip that joins two mountains together. Haha. And we finally did. We were commenting on how it looks exactly like how it does in the Internet, so luckily it wasn't a wasted trip.

Snorkeling was quite a traumatizing experience for me because I don’t know how to swim. Urgh. Thank god for lifejackets.

We then had lunch at Nangyuan and did a bit of shallow water snorkeling, sunbathing and then made our way up to the viewpoint. It was well worth the climb up that mountain. Phew!

A bird's eye view of Nangyuan

Back to Samui

Here’s a peek at the first place we stayed at:

Day 2 - Lamai Town and Grandfather & Grandmother Rocks

Lamai Town

Heading towards Lamai Beach

Got myself a fake tattoo there as well:

I can't stop taking pictures of cats. Hmm.

After chilling out at Lamai Beach, we headed towards the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks:

The Grandfather Rock...

...and the Grandmother Rock

Hahahaha.

Walking back to Lamai

Still walking....

Are we there yet?

Dinner time
Day 3 - Driving around Samui on her birthday

Poor girl has been sick throughout the trip and especially so on her birthday when we had planned to kayak at Angthong. So we spent half the day catching up on lost sleep and decided to rent a jeep to go round the island instead.

Ok, I think it says Namuang Waterfall

After making our way through the stones, forest and whatnot, we headed towards the west side of the island to catch the sunset:

Catching the sunset from the back of the jeep

In celebration of my Bunny's birthday, we chanced upon a seafood restaurant called The Happy Elephant in the Fisherman's Village at Bophut:

I must say we were quite lucky to have chanced upon this restaurant, and after that, we bought a slice of blackforest cake in the shopping mall at Samui to celebrate the yearly ritual of making wishes on your birthday. She made three. Haha. Happy birthday again, my love.

Day 4 - Day Trip to Angthong

Joined another trip to the National Marine Park to visit the Emerald Lagoon, Angthong and did some snorkeling....again.

1+ hour on a speedboat

Treading really carefully this time...

On our way to see the Emerald Lagoon

Climbing up to the viewpoint

We then hopped from Mae Koh to Angthong:

We returned to Samui and moved our stuff to another resort near the beach where we stayed at for the last night:

Chillin'

Slept like pigs and woke up at 9+ to shop at Chaweng. Managed to brush up on my bargaining skills too. Haha.

Day 5 - Chillin' at Chaweng Beach

Some last minute shopping...

Waiting for our ride to the plane

Goodbye Samui.....

I have only uploaded just a bit of the 500 over pics we took and the rest of the pictures were simply breathtaking.

A very unforgettable and wonderful trip. Hope to go back there again sometime. Hmm.
