I received a telephone call from HSBC at 10:05pm this evening. The first thing the guy asked was, "Are you in UK?" And that was it. I immediately knew that someone was using my credit card details in UK.
Apparently, the thief tried using my card details and pin number to withdraw cash in the UK. The person tried once at 9:59pm and was unsuccessful. He/she then tried again at 10:00pm and was unsuccessful once again (phew!) because the bank suspected that it was a fraud, hence they're able to block it immediately with their super whiz computers and algorithms. HSBC then called me at 10:05pm to check if I was in Singapore and if I was the person who was trying to make that transaction. My card has been blocked and a new one will be reissued.
According to my findings on the internet, my card got skimmed. Meaning some device was used to store my card details and pin number, and this information was probably sold to someone else who tried to withdraw money in UK. The dodgy thing about this is that I hardly use this card. And I happened to use it tonight for dinner at Sakae Sushi. So that's quite dodgy. I also used it a month ago in Vietnam for one transaction. So it either got skimmed in SG or in VN.
I read that there have been plenty of cases in SG, especially at restaurants because they take your card out of sight and insert it into an electronic device that captures your data. Anyway, I'm going to lodge a police report today and I now officially make up part of the statistics for victims of credit fraud.
