Plain Anne

Let's face it - The world is superficial.

It's superficial because good-looking people make more friends and acquaintances while plain, less than average looking people get by life with a bunch of good friends. They compensate their lack of looks with their jovial, outgoing nature.

It's superficial because good-looking people are more well-liked in the workplace. They climb slightly faster than the plain Jane sitting in her cubicle, who perhaps does more work than anyone else. They are not the boss' pet and aren't part of the "clique".

The world is superficial because good-looking people have a bad habit of pointing out the flaws of others - no matter physical or innate - so that they can remain on their self-proclaimed pedestal and build their so-called confidence.

The good-looking ones receive compliments without having to do or say anything, while the average-looking person gets noticed and receives compliments only when she commits an act of kindness.

The world is superficial. We all are. We'd prefer eye-candy over a boring slice of pound cake. But...

Plain Jane sees more beauty in life. She notices a more beautiful sunset and how the air smells in the morning. She observes others with keen interest and sees more than those preoccupied with looking at themselves in the mirror.

Plain Jane notices the appeal of other plain Janes and is attracted to their humility and down-to-earth attitude, while attractive Anne only see the physical beauty of another.

Plain Jane knows her friends are the ones whom she can trust without reservation, who would sit with her in silence and go through the tempest together, while the attractive Anne worries whether her friends will cease contacting her because she's no longer single and available, or because she's no longer fun and attractive. Or worse, she's no longer popular.

Attractive Anne scrapes through life, makes plenty of friends, and grows up not knowing who her trusted allies are. Plain Jane barely gets past high school without being taunted, makes a handful of friends - enough to be counted with two hands - and grows up being loved by her closest friends and family, who would go lengths for her.

So who am I?

I'm "Plain Anne". A pound cake with sugar frosting but sometimes a pound cake with jam filling.
