A video titled "Bastards bullying Singapore senior citizen in his 70s"

My colleague sent me this video that was so painful to watch:

But I finished watching it and I even read the comments left by, I believe, Singaporeans. It has sparked a frenzy of blind racist assault on all ang mohs (Caucasians; British to be exact), with the bulk of the insults and vulgarities coming from Singaporeans.

This does not justify a gracious society but I totally understand the rage that they felt while watching this video. Albeit a small matter that occurs frequently in the tourist industry, the intensity of the assaults stem from the fact that the victim of this incident was an elderly man and the protagonist? An ang moh.

The comments even extend to the UK guy's user account area! (http://youtube.com/user/B0Davis). The original video posted by him was named as "The slowest taxi in Southeast Asia". Someone came across it and re-posted it with an account name called "ukbastards".

Perhaps it's not about the race, country or nationality. I'm sure this happens everywhere. Replace the white people on the trishaw with Chinese people. You'll still feel enraged about the way the old man was treated. At the end of the day, we must remember that it's not about discriminating another race but how we treat others: no matter what skin colour.

Sigh. And when you start thinking further, you'll also see how ageism has affected this country, how our elderly are cast aside with no assistance from the gah'ment and how we, their fruits of labour, are treating them now.

Whatever happened to empathy?
